As the
first Vice President to assume the Presidency as a result of the death of a President,
John Tyler was beset by troubles from the very beginning, yet he persevered. He was
devoted to the goal of expanding the Union even to California. He chose the annexation of
Texas as not only symbolic of the inevitable expansion, but as a cause célèbre. The
battle over Texas involves the intensifying slavery issue. Tyler's opposition is
personified by John Quincy Adams, the Representative from Massachusetts, a man necessary
for Congressional approval. The audience/reader also meets Julia Gardiner, Tylers
young wife-to-be as well as an older Dolley Madison. Written by Lorraine Ash. Published,
1998. 31 pages. |
